The Human Candle: A Fake Horror Story About Real Handoffs

We made a vertical short film. About four minutes. Storm, temple, one candle, one very bad confession.

It is called The Human Candle, adapted from 《人油蜡烛》, the classic Japanese mystery by Kozakai Fuboku (小酒井不木). You can watch the full cut on this page (and on YueFetch too). No gore close-ups. Plenty of “wait, what?”

The plot, said plainly

Storm night. Young monk Faxin is scared of the thunder. His master makes him patrol the main hall anyway. Lantern. Candle. Amida.

Then the old monk “confesses.”

He says he loves the smell of a cremation. He says he poisoned the last novice, Ryojun. He says he made candles from human fat. He says this is the last candle. When it goes out, Faxin dies next.

Faxin begs. The old monk offers a deal: kill a “stand-in” instead—the thief hiding behind the Buddha statue, the one who stole the offerings.

Faxin goes. The thief sees something shiny in his hand, screams, and runs into the rain.

Then the twist, which we are not coy about, because the whole point is the twist:

The knife is a fan. The candle is a normal shop candle. Ryojun died of illness. The whole confession was made up on the spot to scare the thief off. The old monk had even borrowed the vibe from the Blue Hood tale in Ugetsu Monogatari. Fake story. Real panic. Thief gone.

Funny, in a dry way. Also annoying, if you were Faxin.

Why we hung this next to Proof

Because the film is about a story that works when nobody can check it.

“Trust me.” “Same as the photo.” “I already told you what happened.”

That energy ships packages every day. Custom jewelry. Freelance files. Keys. Samples. Anything you hand to someone else and hope the later argument does not start with “but you said…”

Proof (makepacket.help) is the boring opposite of a temple ghost story.

You take a photo when you hand something over. The other person taps Confirm. Later, if the story starts floating, you still have a record. Not notarization theater. Not a scary monologue. Just: this was the handoff, this is what we both agreed we saw.

In our film’s modern beat, that Confirm feels almost unnecessary the first time. After the twist, it feels like the only adult move in the room.

Fake stories scare people. Confirmed handoffs bore people. Boredom ages better.

Watch, then try the un-scary version

Full vertical film: The Human Candle (~3:56).

Next time you pass a package, a piece, or a deliverable:

  • Take one photo.
  • Let them Confirm.
  • Keep the packet.

That is enough.

Start a handoff record on Proof. The public sample is a key handover: the sample Proof. Same shape: terms, photos, both people confirmed, one link. To write one for a package, a piece, or a file, open a shopper packet.

Free is 3 packets a month. Pro is $24 a month or $240 a year. The person you invite does not pay to view or to Confirm. Questions: hello@yuefetch.com.
